Four to six months before the event is a good time frame to book your
transportation. For less common means of transportation, i.e. if it is not
a standard limo, you should book up to eight months ahead of time. We also
recommend you give the company a call one month before the event and once
again one week ahead of time to check in.
When calling around to limo companies ask for a flier stating their prices.
Asking for a flier with prices written down will help you know that you
are not getting an inflated price over the phone. Some limo companies have
a gratuity that is 15-20% of the price of the rental. Others offer special
discounts for multiple cars. Some companies charge more than others for
overtime. Is the deposit refundable? Be sure to get a contract so you have
everything in writing. Remember, everything is negotiable and you should
always pay by credit card so that your investment is protected when things
go wrong. All of these things should be considered when calling around to
compare prices.
Referrals are always a good way to find a reputable company. Photographers
can often give good referrals since they may know who shows up on time and
who does not show up at all. Ask the company how long they have been in
business, how many cars they actually own versus rent from a different
company, and what percentage of their business is weddings and what portion
is airport runs. Limo services who frequent the airport tend to be less
reliable than those that do not. Ask the business what associations they
belong to and whether they are licensed and insured.
Once you have narrowed your search down to three or four limo companies you
should spend a day visiting the cars. Some companies keep their cars in
better shape than others and we suggest that you know what you are paying
for. Older cars are, well, old. Although charming in demeanor, they have
been around longer and you need to be sure they have been well kept. One
thing you need to consider when you choose a car is how many passengers can
fit in the car. It is most unpleasant to be in a car with ten people and it
only seats six. We suggest if you need to fit six people rent a car that
seats eight. Ask the year and make of the car so that you are sure you are
getting what you pay for. You don’t want to reserve and pay for a new car
and have a ten year old limo show up at your door. Check out the cars
amenities. Is a television or booming speakers important to you? Can you
bring your own alcohol? Jacuzzi, sunroof, dvd player, or playstation--determine what is important to you and in your budget.
Ask who your driver is and provide him with directions the day of the
event. Ask what your driver will be wearing. For some the ride seems to
lose its appeal if he is in cut off shorts and flip flops. Have cash on hand
for tipping. Some companies have salaried drivers versus drivers who are
on call.
Like most things in life- you get what you pay for- and limos are no
exception. By being a savvy consumer you can sit back, relax, and enjoy the
ride on your special day. |
